A Luxurious Nod to Local Heritage: W Punta de Mita’s Major Renovation

Punta de Mita (PVDN) – Drawing on the vivid culture and rich history of the region, W Punta de Mita has consistently been a top choice for travelers since its inauguration in 2016. Recently, it underwent a comprehensive $3 million renovation, revamping its rooms, restaurants, and communal spaces, all imbued with a chic and contemporary style that accentuates local elements and reflects its destination-based “Ethos”.

The renovations were steered by the W brand’s refreshed strategy for modern travelers — the culture enthusiasts seeking meaningful experiences, transformative travel, and community engagement. The refurbished Living Room and Welcome Area, the resort’s social epicenter and congregation space, feature modern furniture adorned with locally handcrafted artifacts, capturing the essence of the region’s culture. Simultaneously, an exclusive boutique “La Cathy”, dedicated to local designers, is another new addition. Hammock-filled, cozy lounge spaces and a bar boasting a grand chandelier mimicking an offering of lit candles further enrich the space, all centered around a corridor inlaid with over 750,000 mosaic pieces inspired by the Wixárika tribe. The corridor stretches towards the ocean, the connecting staircase symbolic of life’s ups and downs.

Situated where the beach meets the jungle and under the towering Sierra Madre mountains, W Punta de Mita’s rooms celebrate the unparalleled natural beauty of their unique location, offering lake, coastal, and ocean vistas. The décor, procured from local craftsmen, engulfs guests in the traditions of the region’s Huichol tribes, with vibrant color bursts and whimsical nods to the local surf culture’s bohemian spirit.

Nestled amidst tall palms, the reinvented Jungle Rooms are transformed into tropical sanctuaries, complete with new pools, outdoor showers, hammocks, and comfy lounge chairs. The renovated suites near the beach now feature private terraces, gardens, fire pits, and designs inspired by local tribal legends of their escape from desert to mountains during the Spanish conquest. The earthy tones, organic materials, and rich wood textures harmonize with their surroundings, creating an awe-inspiring sequence of experiences for guests, starting with the spacious open-air baths with smooth, round stone flooring.

Through 2023, the resort plans to unveil eight new suites: five Marvelous Beachfront Suites with interior garden-ensconced soaking tubs; two Fantastic Beachfront Suites with private rooftops offering unparalleled ocean views; and a completely renovated flagship E-Wow Suite, boasting a white marble-clad kitchen, and living and dining spaces with floor-to-ceiling windows showcasing ocean views.

The resort’s adult pool, Wet TOO, known for its Instagram-worthy transparent wall overlooking the ocean, now features a revamped deck, new bohemian furnishings, and an upgraded full-service food and beverage offering. A complete renovation of Salero, the poolside and beachfront seafood restaurant, is also slated for 2023.

Spring will also see the debut of Rubra, a restaurant helmed by renowned Mexican chef Daniela Soto-Innes, who has previously exhibited her culinary skills at Cosme y Atala in New York. Collaborating with partners Santiago Pérez and Enrique Olvera from Casamata culinary group, known for concepts such as Pujol in Mexico City and Damian in Los Angeles, Soto-Innes brings her award-winning talents to the resort, with accolades including the James Beard Rising Star Chef of the Year and World’s Best Female Chef at the World’s 50 Best Awards.

According to Gabriela Cordero, Director of Operations, the resort’s transformation was never about a complete overhaul. The aim was to refine what they already excel at, drawing inspiration from their surroundings to create a serene space where guests can authentically experience the destination. As guest preferences continue to evolve, the resort

pledges to stay attuned to these changes, evolving to fulfill audience demands and competing with the best in the luxury travel sphere.

“The goal of this extensive renovation was not to completely change the aesthetic of our resort but rather to amplify the elements that already made us stand out,” says Gabriela Cordero. “We wanted to bring our guests closer to the rich culture and stunning natural beauty that our unique location provides, while also offering a tranquil, luxurious haven to relax in. We’ve taken the best of what we do, enhanced it with inspiration from our surroundings, and created a truly unique space where our guests can experience the destination in a laid-back, genuine manner.”

“We are aware that in the fast-paced, ever-evolving world of luxury travel, staying at the top requires constant adaptation and innovation. Our guest-centric approach drives us to remain attentive and responsive to their changing needs. We are committed to continuously exploring ways to evolve our offerings and keep pace with the world’s leading luxury travel destinations,” she concludes.

Whether you’re seeking a unique cultural experience, craving the beauty of pristine beaches, lush jungles, and awe-inspiring mountain views, or simply wish to unwind in a tranquil and luxurious environment, W Punta de Mita’s thoughtful redesign is ready to welcome you. Its combination of rich history, vibrant culture, and modern comforts are sure to provide a truly unique and unforgettable experience.
