PUERTO VALLARTA (PVDN) – The 23rd edition of the Puerto Vallarta International Film Festival (FICPV) has officially opened with an illustrious gala at the Dr. Juan Luis Cifuentes Lemus Auditorium, located in the Centro Universitario de la Costa (CUCosta). The festival, running from June 8th to 11th, showcases a diverse selection of films and brings together movie enthusiasts from around the globe.
Dr. Jorge Téllez López, the rector of CUCosta, led the event, surrounded by municipal authorities, coordinators, and film fans. During his opening remarks, Téllez López emphasized that the auditorium is once more “dressed up to kick off the long-awaited festival, which can be enjoyed in different projection spaces in the city, once again turning Puerto Vallarta into a city of film.” He also paid tribute to Raúl Padilla López, promoter of the Guadalajara and Puerto Vallarta Film Festivals.
The festival was inaugurated with the screening of ‘La Pecera,’ directed by Glorimar Marrero-Sánchez, who was the honored recipient of the ‘Iguana de Oro’ award. Other notable films set for display include the 1991 classic “La Mujer de Benjamín” and a tribute to acclaimed actress Arcelia Ramírez.
The 2023 feature “Networks: Games of Life” will be screened with its director, César Aréchiga, in attendance. The festival is set to conclude with a screening of “Martínez” (2023), featuring director Lorena Padilla and actress Martha Claudia Moreno, as stated by the festival’s General Coordinator, Mtra. Ana Elena Martín del Campo.
In a show of solidarity and support for the local community, the FICPV, in association with the Fundación Universidad de Guadalajara AC, will host a gala benefit for the Los Mangos Library Cultural Center. All box office proceeds from the screening of “Almamula” (2023), directed by Juan Sebastián Torales, will be donated to the center.
Adding international flavor to the event, the tenth edition of the Maguey Prize will spotlight the 2022 film “Kenya,” with director Gisela Delgadillo attending as a special guest. Another highlight includes a screening of “El Castillo” (2023) under the direction of Martín Benchimol.
In this year’s academic section, renowned Mexican director and cinematographer, Olivia Luengas, will present a Master Class titled: “Approach to Documentary Film”.
As part of the long-standing tradition, the FICPV will once again feature a selection of short films in collaboration with the Guadalajara International Film Festival, further strengthening its relationship with its sister festival.
This year’s FICPV reaffirms Puerto Vallarta’s reputation as a city of film, offering a broad array of cinematic delights to both the local community and international visitors. As this beloved event opens, attendees can anticipate a truly immersive film experience in the coming days.
