Puerto Vallarta’s iconic “Puerto Vallarta” letters on the Malecón have been restored to their original splendor, showcasing the legacy of the renowned local painter Manuel Lepe. The restoration was celebrated with an unveiling ceremony attended by local dignitaries, artists, and the community.
The interim mayor, Francisco José Martínez Gil, praised the restoration of these beloved letters, emphasizing their unique connection to the city. “In no other city do the letters have the love, the character, and a part of the true heart of the city as those of Puerto Vallarta. Many of us grew up admiring Manuel Lepe; how could we not remember the stories when we were children?” he remarked.
Marcela Lepe and her nephew Luis, who spearheaded the restoration, were commended by the mayor for their dedication to preserving Manuel Lepe’s artistic legacy. “We have an obligation to preserve it because it is part of our culture. We have all boasted about these words because they have Manuel Lepe’s motives,” he added.
Marcela Lepe Quiroz, expressing her hopes for greater recognition of Vallarta’s artists, stated, “These letters were painted with love for Puerto Vallarta by my nephew Luis and me, seeking to capture the magic of Manuel Lepe’s work. I thank the friends who have always supported me and my family.”
Brenda Janeth Díaz Flores, director of the Vallarta Institute of Culture (IVC), praised Marcela Lepe’s passion for promoting her father’s legacy. “Manuel Lepe’s influence continues to be a source of pride for Vallarta,” she noted.
The “Puerto Vallarta” letters were first installed in 2016 as a cultural and artistic landmark during World Tourism Day celebrations. At that time, Manuel Lepe’s family was not involved in the project, nor was his work acknowledged. This recent restoration seeks to rectify that oversight and honor Lepe’s artistic contribution.
The city of Puerto Vallarta, renowned for its breathtaking sunsets and vibrant cultural scene, considers Manuel Lepe one of its most cherished ambassadors. His Naif style, characterized by vivid colors and whimsical scenes, has captured the hearts of Vallartenses and visitors alike, transcending generations and cultures.
The event on Wednesday was attended by the president of the DIF System, Eugenia López Ventura, councilor Pablo Ruperto Gómez Andrade, members of the IVC Governing Board, and relatives of Manuel Lepe. Prominent local businessman Gabriel Igartúa Sánchez also joined the celebration.
The ceremony featured performances by the Xiutla Folkloric Ballet and a saxophonist, adding to the festive atmosphere and paying homage to Puerto Vallarta’s rich artistic heritage.
