Puerto Vallarta, Mexico – A pro-Palestine activist vandalized a statue of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu at the Wax Museum in Mexico City, as shown in a video posted on Instagram by the account @BTSnewsroom. The video captures the activist covering the statue in red paint, simulating blood, and striking its face with a hammer before smashing the sculpture to the floor.
The individual, carrying a Palestinian flag, laid it at the base of the statue and addressed the camera, stating, “With a lot of respect for the Jewish community, [I’m doing this] for Hind Rajab.” Hind Rajab, a five-year-old Palestinian girl, was reportedly killed on January 29, 2024, alongside her cousins, aunt, and uncle. The deaths have been attributed by some to Israel’s Defense Forces, though Israel denies these accusations.
Calling Netanyahu a “genocidal [State leader],” the activist’s actions appeared to be a direct protest against Israeli policies. The video concluded with the perpetrator declaring support for several regions and movements, saying: “Long live Palestine. Long live Sudan. Long live Yemen. Long live Puerto Rico. Long live Tigray.”
The Israeli Embassy in Mexico issued a statement condemning the destruction of the sculpture, describing it as “a detestable act that sends a dangerous message of violence, intolerance, and hatred that goes beyond any legitimate criticism.” The embassy also called on cultural institutions in Mexico to take steps to prevent future “acts of pure violence.”
As of this report, neither the Wax Museum nor Mexican authorities have commented on the incident. It remains unclear whether the institution or law enforcement will pursue legal action against the activist.
This act of vandalism has sparked conversations on social media, with some praising the activist’s stance against perceived injustices and others condemning the destruction as counterproductive and harmful to diplomatic discourse. The incident highlights the deepening polarization surrounding the ongoing Israeli-Palestinian conflict and its global repercussions.
