Bahía de Banderas, Nayarit – The municipality of Bahía de Banderas is making headlines for its unwavering commitment to maintaining and expanding the quality of its coastal waters. With 10 nationally and internationally certified beaches, the region now boasts the highest number of recognized destinations in the country, setting a benchmark in environmental and tourism excellence.
“We’re happy because we’re currently receiving certification bodies and are seeing good results,” said Claudia Díaz, the municipality’s Director of Tourism. “Historically, beaches have been well-maintained. We’re the state with the most certified beaches nationwide. Several beaches in Bahía de Banderas have this certification. At the end of March, we had several beaches recertified. Our commitment is not only to maintain this certification, but also to expand our beaches. We have the ‘blue flag,’ Standard 120, and Platinum beaches.”
A Model for Environmental Stewardship
The comprehensive certification process, which includes internationally acclaimed labels such as the Blue Flag, Standard 120, and Platinum, underscores the region’s dedication to preserving water quality and environmental standards. This achievement not only enhances the municipality’s reputation but also contributes to sustainable tourism and ecological conservation efforts.
Enhanced Safety with Increased Lifeguard Coverage
In anticipation of the busy holiday season, local authorities are also stepping up efforts to ensure visitor safety. Currently, the municipality employs at least 25 lifeguards along its coastlines, a significant increase from the 12 lifeguards available in the past. The renewed focus on safety is supported by the state’s Civil Protection agency and the Navy, working together to guarantee that every segment of the coastline is monitored.
“At the time, we had 12 lifeguards and a recent recruitment effort for new employees. However, the state’s Civil Protection agency is helping with this effort, sharing the coastline so everyone has coverage and a presence, working hand in hand with the Navy,” Díaz explained.
Economic Impact and Tourism Outlook
The upcoming holiday period is expected to bring a high economic spillover, with nearly $100 million projected for the region, including the neighboring areas of Puerto Vallarta, Jalisco. Hotel occupancy rates are predicted to be around 83% during the week, surging to 92% on peak days such as Fridays and Saturdays during Holy Week.
“For the holiday period, it’s almost 83%, and we have a peak of up to 92% on Friday and Saturday during Holy Week,” stated Díaz, reflecting the optimistic forecast for the region’s tourism sector.

Banderas Bay is not just a hub for beachgoers but a vital ecological and economic asset for both Nayarit and the broader region. Renowned for its natural beauty, the bay is home to a diverse array of marine life and migratory birds. Iconic attractions such as Marietas Island and its famous “Hidden Beach” have become synonymous with ecological preservation and tourism. Additionally, the bay plays a critical role in the conservation of humpback whales, which migrate to these waters annually, drawing enthusiasts and researchers alike for whale-watching expeditions.
