Puerto Vallarta’s municipal authorities have kicked off preparations for the 2025 Pacific hurricane season, which officially begins today, May 15, and runs through November 30. Director of Civil Protection and Firefighters Misael López Muro confirmed that all emergency shelters have been inspected, stocked with supplies, and are ready to open if needed. He also announced that the Municipal Civil Protection Council will remain in permanent session throughout the season to coordinate rapid response efforts in the event of severe weather.
SEAPAL Vallarta, the city’s water utility, has scheduled urgent repair work on Well 37 from May 14 to May 15, causing low pressure or complete outages in 48 neighborhoods, with full service expected to resume by 6 p.m. today. At the same time, maintenance on the pumping equipment at Pozo 4B has left 19 colonias in the northeast—such as Ramblases, Independencia, and Las Torres—facing low pressure or total service suspensions until the morning of May 16. Officials are urging residents to store water and use it sparingly until repairs are complete.
In public safety news, Edwin Aran “N” was arrested on May 13 following a joint operation by Nayarit and Jalisco prosecutors alongside the U.S. Federal Bureau of Investigation. He is accused of abducting an American national from a Puerto Vallarta apartment and moving the victim to a motel in San Clemente de Lima. The victim was rescued unharmed, and authorities are investigating whether there were accomplices.
Political preparations continue as well: on May 14, military personnel delivered 2,043,664 ballots to the local office of the National Electoral Institute (INE) in the López Mateos neighborhood. These ballots are for Mexico’s first-ever federal judicial election slated for June 1, during which voters will fill 33 positions—including Supreme Court justices and electoral tribunal magistrates—at polling stations opening at 8 a.m. and closing at 6 p.m.
Cultural highlights include the kickoff of Puerto Vallarta Pride 2025. The March Against Homophobia takes place this Saturday, May 17, uniting LGBTIQ+ collectives, activists, and allies in a vibrant parade through the city center. The weeklong Pride schedule will feature beach parties, cultural exhibitions, film screenings, and community workshops designed to celebrate diversity and inclusion.
Looking ahead to weekend festivities, Sabores de Vallarta returns on Saturday, May 31, at the Puerto de Luna esplanade. The third annual food festival will showcase over 40 dishes from 25 of Puerto Vallarta’s top restaurants—ranging from fresh aguachiles and grilled meats to vegetarian specialties and mixology bars—all free of charge from 2 p.m. to 11 p.m.
