Puerto Vallarta, Mexico – Volaris this week announced a new thrice-weekly flight service between Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) and Tepic’s recently expanded Riviera Nayarit International Airport (TPQ). Operations begin on July 16, 2025, and will run every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday. The move marks the first direct connection between California’s largest airport and Tepic, the capital of Nayarit, tapping growing demand for business, leisure, and family travel.
At a press conference held at LAX, Gustavo Martínez Cianca, Mexico’s Consul General in Los Angeles; Juan Enrique Suárez, Nayarit’s Secretary of Tourism; and Jorge Roberto García Rojas, Volaris’s Director of Distribution and Market Development, outlined the route’s details and strategic importance. Martínez Cianca praised the launch as a boost to bilateral ties. Suárez highlighted its role in drawing Angelenos to coastal resorts and inland attractions. García Rojas underscored Volaris’s plan to expand its domestic and international network while retaining top passenger volume in all its markets.
The service will operate three times weekly. Flights depart LAX on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday mornings, arriving in Tepic later the same day. Return trips leave Tepic in the afternoon, giving travelers ample time for meetings, family visits, or beachside stays. Volaris confirmed tickets are available now through its online booking platform.
Los Angeles and its surrounding regions rank as a priority market for Nayarit’s tourism campaign. Officials note that Angelenos have long regarded Riviera Nayarit as a natural getaway, drawn by surf towns, luxury resorts, and emerging culinary scenes. The new route caters to leisure seekers and business travelers alike, offering a direct link to one of Mexico’s fastest-growing coastal corridors.
“Tepic stands out as an attractive city with a rich history and vibrant culture,” Suárez said. “It offers everything families and business travelers need. Now, with direct flights from Los Angeles, we open new possibilities for tourism, commerce, and family reunions.” He credited airport authorities, tourism entrepreneurs, and local government for collaborating on the TPQ expansion that made the route viable.
The Riviera Nayarit International Airport upgrade represents a major leap in the state’s travel infrastructure. Planners project it will serve four million passengers in its initial phase, with capacity to handle up to 20 million annually. Enhancements include enlarged terminals, modern baggage systems, and reinforced runways for larger aircraft. With these improvements, TPQ aims to become a key gateway for international visitors.
“I deeply appreciate Volaris’s commitment to our destination,” Suárez added. “This new link cements Nayarit’s status as a world-class travel hub.” His remarks reflect ongoing efforts to diversify tourism beyond beaches and into Tepic’s historic center, cultural festivals, and nearby natural parks.
Volaris first began operations in Tepic in 2012, launching flights to Tijuana. Since then, the airline has carried over 1.3 million passengers on that route, securing a 73 percent market share. García Rojas said this strong performance underscores Tepic’s appeal and supports further network growth in underserved markets.
“The city of Tepic has become a key destination for Volaris due to its cultural richness and economic dynamism,” García Rojas said. “This expansion shows we’re on the right path, crossing borders to encourage social, cultural, and economic exchange between our nations.”
In Los Angeles, Volaris started service in 2009. To date, it has flown more than 11.4 million customers across 13 routes connecting LAX with destinations in Mexico, Central America, and South America. Adding Tepic to its U.S. schedule builds on over 15 years of operations and customer trust.
The new Volaris Los Angeles Tepic route strengthens ties between California and Nayarit, simplifying travel for entrepreneurs, tourists, and diaspora communities. With affordable fares and convenient schedules, officials and airline executives expect strong demand from Angelenos seeking fresh Mexican destinations.
As ticket sales open and summer travel plans take shape, both Volaris and the Nayarit tourism board anticipate the new service will boost passenger traffic and stimulate local economies. The service launches July 16, offering travelers a direct, reliable link to Riviera Nayarit and beyond.
