At Least 26 People Rescued From Drowning Over Easter Weekend in Puerto Vallarta

Puerto Vallarta, Mexico – During the Easter holiday period, Puerto Vallarta witnessed a surge in beachgoers, with over 26 individuals narrowly escaping drowning incidents, thanks to the vigilant efforts of the Civil Protection and Fire Department. Gerardo Alonso Castillón Andrade, the department’s head, revealed these figures during a recent press conference, shedding light on the agency’s relentless commitment to public safety amidst heightened tourist activity.

From March 24 to 31, the Civil Protection team conducted a total of 310 services, addressing a diverse range of emergencies. Among these, 113 instances involved fires, 173 required pre-hospital care, and 19 involved aquatic rescues, ultimately saving 26 individuals from perilous waters. These rescues encompassed men, women, and minors, underscoring the indiscriminate nature of the dangers lurking along Puerto Vallarta’s picturesque coastline.

Furthermore, the team responded to 33 vehicular collisions, including two rollovers and two motorcycle accidents, further emphasizing the multifaceted challenges inherent in maintaining public safety during peak tourism periods.

Reflecting on the sheer influx of visitors, Castillón revealed staggering statistics, indicating that approximately 82,000 people flocked to the city’s beaches during this period. Notably, Camarones Los Muertos and Palmares emerged as the most frequented destinations, serving as hubs of recreational activity for both locals and tourists alike.

Equally popular was the iconic Malecón, attracting an estimated 19,000 individuals seeking leisure and entertainment. Given its popularity, the area remained under constant surveillance to mitigate potential risks and ensure the well-being of visitors.

Amidst the festivities, the department’s proactive measures included the strategic placement of red and purple flags on select beaches, signaling high tides and the presence of hazardous marine life. Despite these precautions, Castillón emphasized that as of Sunday, March 31, the prevailing white flag status prevailed, indicating a balance between safety and enjoyment for beachgoers.

As Puerto Vallarta continues to enchant tourists with its pristine shores and vibrant culture, the unwavering dedication of the Civil Protection and Fire Department remains a cornerstone of ensuring a memorable and, above all, safe experience for all who visit the cherished coastal paradise.
