EEUU permitirà acceso directo de Mèxico a datos de satèlite

Estados Unidos y México firmaron el viernes un acuerdo para capturar y procesar imágenes y datos de la superficie mexicana directamente desde un satélite operado por autoridades estadounidenses.

Con el acuerdo el país latinoamericano podrá recibir la información generada por el satélite Landsat 8 en bruto y de inmediato en lugar de esperar a que las autoridades de Estados Unidos la filtren.

Así, México se suma a media docena de países que ya descargan esa información sin intermediarios desde satélites de Estados Unidos, dijo la secretaria estadounidense del Interior Sally Jewell, de visita en territorio mexicano.

Las autoridades explicaron que la medida será beneficiosa para la agricultura, la geología, el sector forestal y el cartográfico, así como para el monitoreo de huracanes. El mes pasado, el poderoso huracán Patricia golpeó el país sin causar grandes daños, ya que llegó en un lugar poco habitado.

El acuerdo “reconoce la capacidad de México, así como su necesidad, de tener datos en tiempo real con los que enfrentarse a los retos y las oportunidades sobre el terreno”, dijo Jewell a The Associated Press. “Si ven lo que sucedió con el huracán Patricia… ése es el tipo de información que México podría haber utilizado en tiempo real para prepararse de cara al impacto”.

“También disminuye su dependencia de Estados Unidos para interpretar los datos y les permite integrarlos directamente con los datos que ya tienen”, añadió. “Eso proporcionará información más útil que la podrían conseguir sin la descarga directa de los datos”.

Jewell y Eduardo Sojo, presidente del Instituto Nacional de Estadística y Geografía de México, firmaron el acuerdo en la capital mexicana como parte de las actividades de la Cumbre Ministerial del Grupo de Observaciones de la Tierra.

Sojo afirmó que México recibirá las descargas del Landsat 8 en una estación operada por la agencia espacial nacional en la ciudad de Chetumal, en Quintana Roo. Ese estado está ubicado en el sureste del país a orillas del Caribe, cerca de la frontera con Belice.

“También, y esto es de especial importancia, recibirán los datos históricos”, dijo Sojo. “Y seremos capaces de construir modelos que nos permitirán anticipar desastres con precisión y generar modelos sobre el impacto del cambio climático sobre temas como inundaciones o agricultura”.

Los datos se compartirán con las instituciones federales, estatales y locales, así como las universidades, sin costo, añadió.
