Grand Venetian Hotel Union Leader Prime Suspect in Murderer of Women’s Rights Activist Irma Fregoso

Puerto Vallarta, Jalisco – Judicial and police authorities are intensifying their search for Rodrigo Pelayo Yerena, the alleged murderer of prominent women’s rights activist Irma Fregoso, a representative of the organization 50+1. The Jalisco Prosecutor’s Office has requested a judge to issue an arrest warrant for Yerena, who serves as the union representative for the employees of the Grand Venetian Hotel in Puerto Vallarta.

State Attorney Luis Joaquín Méndez Ruíz confirmed the ongoing investigation: “We are conducting an open investigation; what I can tell you is that there is an arrest warrant against a male person. We will wait for it to be carried out.”

He further added, “We are already working on this, we have operations in some areas, and for reasons of the investigation itself I will omit them, but I hope to be giving some progress in the fulfillment of the order through the area of social communication in the next few days.”

Irma Fregoso Found Dead

The tragic incident occurred outside the CTM facilities, located at the intersection of Nicaragua and Colombia streets in the 5 de Diciembre neighborhood of Puerto Vallarta. The alleged murderer, identified as Rodrigo “N”, met with Fregoso on Monday morning for a meeting regarding the review of the workers’ collective agreement, as she was the legal representative of the hotel.

According to initial reports, the attack took place after Fregoso had just said goodbye to an individual accompanying her. Yerena allegedly followed her and attacked from behind, resulting in her death. The companion, who witnessed the murder, was subsequently chased by Yerena and shot at with a firearm before Yerena fled the scene. His current whereabouts remain unknown, with authorities maintaining surveillance at his home and offices.

Community Mobilization

In the wake of Fregoso’s murder, members of women’s defense organizations have mobilized, sharing a photograph of the alleged murderer on social media and calling for public cooperation to report any sightings of Yerena and aid in his apprehension. The brutal killing of Fregoso has sent shockwaves through the community, igniting calls for justice and increased protection for activists.

The Jalisco Prosecutor’s Office is urging anyone with information on Rodrigo Pelayo Yerena’s whereabouts to come forward. As the investigation continues, authorities are committed to ensuring that justice is served for Irma Fregoso and her family.

Ongoing Investigations

The Jalisco Prosecutor’s Office, along with local law enforcement agencies, is leaving no stone unturned in their search for Yerena. With operations already underway in several undisclosed areas, authorities are hopeful that an arrest will be made soon. The case has garnered significant attention, highlighting the risks faced by activists in the region.

State Attorney Méndez Ruíz has assured the public that updates on the case will be provided through official communication channels as new developments arise. In the meantime, the community remains vigilant, hoping for a swift resolution to this tragic case.
