Heavy Sargassum Clouds Playa del Carmen and Tulum Beaches

Heavy Sargassum Clouds Playa del Carmen and Tulum Beaches

Sargassum conditions changed sharply along the Riviera Maya on Wednesday, with some popular beaches in Playa del Carmen and Tulum reporting heavy buildup and cloudy water. The worst-hit areas were not the only options for beachgoers, though. Current reports pointed toward several lower-impact alternatives, including some northern Playa del Carmen beaches, nearby islands, and inland swimming spots. For residents and visitors making same-day plans, the details matter because conditions can shift from one beach to the next.

Heavy sargassum reaches busy Riviera Maya beaches

Heavy sargassum affected parts of Playa del Carmen and Tulum on Wednesday, May 20, with several beaches reporting high accumulation and murky water.

In Playa del Carmen, the heaviest conditions were reported around El Recodo, Playa Fundadores, and Playa Mamitas. These areas had visible buildup along the shore, even as cleanup work continued.

The conditions were not the same across the coast. Some beaches in Cancún had lower levels, while parts of Playa del Carmen and Tulum were dealing with stronger arrivals.

Playa del Carmen and Tulum see heavier impact

In Playa del Carmen, reports pointed to high or severe accumulation in the municipality of Solidaridad. The affected areas included some of the city’s most visited central beaches.

Visitors were pointed toward the north side of the municipality, including Xcalacoco and Playa 72, where the impact was lower than in the central beach zone.

In Tulum, the hotel zone, Punta Piedra, and the area near the archaeological zone were reported with heavy arrivals. Those conditions can affect swimming, beach walks, and water visibility.

Alternatives include islands and inland water sites

For people trying to avoid the worst conditions, reports pointed to Isla Mujeres, Cozumel, and Holbox as lower-impact alternatives.

In Cozumel, the sargassum impact was reported mainly on the eastern coast. Western beaches such as Palancar, El Cielo, and San Francisco were described as cleaner options.

Cenotes in the Riviera Maya and Bacalar were also listed as alternatives because they are not affected by the arrival of marine algae.

Beach conditions can change quickly during sargassum season. Residents and visitors should check same-day reports before making plans, especially when choosing between beaches only a short distance apart.
