Hurricane Simón Cuts Puerto Vallarta Services Saturday

Puerto Vallarta, Jalisco, Oct. 10, 2026 — National Civil Protection urged Puerto Vallarta residents to shelter by 5 p.m. Saturday ahead of Hurricane Simón.

The National Hurricane Center’s 3 a.m. advisory classified Simón as a Category 4 hurricane, with maximum sustained winds of 145 mph (230 kph).

Forecasters warned of flooding and landslides across parts of southwestern Mexico. Tropical-storm conditions could reach the coastal warning area Saturday morning, before the hurricane’s center approaches.

Bus service ends at the shelter deadline

Unibus PV announced that buses will operate only until 5 p.m. Saturday and asked passengers to organize their journeys in advance.

The transport cutoff coincides with Civil Protection’s recommended shelter time. Residents relying on buses for work, supplies, or shelter access should arrange their return or arrival before service stops.

Jalisco Civil Protection director Sergio Ramírez López said nonessential activities, including gas stations, would stop at 5 p.m. Essential infrastructure operations would continue with coordination from emergency authorities.

“If you are in a risk zone, if you have already been warned, follow the authorities’ recommendations,” Ramírez López said.

National Civil Protection asked people whose homes face flooding or landslide risks to move to refuges early. Residents in homes outside those risk areas were asked to remain sheltered.

Five shelters include a location accepting pets

Municipal DIF announced five temporary shelters in Puerto Vallarta. Its Friday location bulletin lists these sites:

  • UNIVA: Avenida Universidad del Valle de Atemajac 500, Villas Universidad.
  • Salón Ejidal de Ixtapa: Calle Benito Juárez 170, Centro, Ixtapa.
  • CECyTEJ: Calle Corea del Sur 560, at Calle 16 de Septiembre, El Mangal.
  • Escuela Primaria 24 de Febrero: Calle Álvaro Obregón 448, El Colorado.
  • Preparatoria Regional “Jacobo”: Calle 21 de Marzo 500, Loma Bonita.

State authorities said UNIVA accepts pets brought on a leash or in a carrier. Animals will occupy a designated space separate from sleeping areas.

DIF advised residents heading to shelters to bring personal documents, essential medications, and basic supplies for their stay.

Store water and keep garbage indoors

SEAPAL Vallarta’s storm preparation notice asks households to have enough stored water for at least 72 hours beginning Saturday morning.

The utility’s contingency plan includes closing storage tank outlets before storm effects arrive if local alerts remain in place. SEAPAL said this would help protect infrastructure and support an orderly restoration of service.

The 72-hour recommendation concerns household reserves; the notice does not announce a fixed three-day outage.

Puerto Vallarta’s municipal services department announced a garbage collection suspension beginning at 7 p.m. Saturday, with collection scheduled to resume at 7 a.m. Monday, Oct. 12.

The department asked residents to keep rubbish off streets and sidewalks during the suspension. Officials said rain could carry loose waste into storm drains and obstruct them.

Bridge access, beaches and flights

Friday’s Amado Nervo bridge status report said the crossing between Puerto Vallarta and Bahía de Banderas remained closed to traffic.

Along the coast, authorities maintained red flags prohibiting swimming Friday and urged residents and visitors to stay out of the sea while dangerous conditions persist.

We checked GAP’s Friday flight cancellation notice, which identifies two canceled Volaris round-trip routes for Saturday:

  • Querétaro–Puerto Vallarta: VOI7506 and VOI7507.
  • Mexico City–Puerto Vallarta: VOI282 and VOI283.

For Sunday, Oct. 11, GAP confirmed cancellation of all scheduled Volaris operations at Puerto Vallarta. These are the weekend flight cancellations announced Friday.

GAP reported that the airport remained open at its 4:30 p.m. Friday update. The operator advised passengers to contact their airline directly for flight status, booking changes, and available alternatives.
