Mexicana Airlines Suspends Operations to Puerto Vallarta and Seven Other Routes Without Prior Notice

Puerto Vallarta, Mexico – Mexicana Airlines has announced the suspension of operations to eight destinations across Mexico, including Puerto Vallarta, significantly reducing the airline’s coverage by approximately 50 percent. The affected routes were previously serviced by TAR Aerolineas, a private company contracted to operate the flights using its own aircraft and crews.

On its official website, Mexicana informed customers that flights to Acapulco, Campeche, Guadalajara, Nuevo Laredo, Puerto Vallarta, Uruapan, and Villahermosa will cease operations immediately. The airline did not provide specific reasons for the abrupt cancellations, instead urging passengers to review the company’s cancellation policies for further information.

A customer service representative confirmed the suspension, stating, “We were notified last week that it had been cancelled, so they will be suspended until further notice.”

Mexicana Airlines, which is controlled by Mexico’s military, was revived after the original Mexicana de Aviación declared bankruptcy in August 2010. The government acquired the brand and reinitiated flight services to 19 domestic destinations, relying heavily on TAR Aerolineas to lease planes and provide operational support for nearly half of the routes.

The decision to partner with TAR stemmed from a limited availability of aircraft in the market. To address this, Mexicana placed an order for 20 planes from the Brazilian manufacturer Embraer.

Mexicana operates as a parastatal entity, with funding sourced from public resources and oversight by the military. Despite the government’s backing, the airline has faced financial challenges, reporting losses exceeding 900 million pesos during its first year of renewed operations. On average, Mexicana carried just 53 passengers per flight.

The suspension comes shortly after Mexicana marked its one-year anniversary of operations on December 26. Felipe Ángeles International Airport (AIFA) remains one of its primary hubs.

The sudden cancellation of these routes underscores ongoing challenges for Mexicana in achieving profitability and operational stability, raising concerns about the airline’s future in Mexico’s aviation sector. Passengers affected by the suspensions are encouraged to contact Mexicana directly for further assistance and rebooking options.
