Mazatlán, Sinaloa – Mazatlán municipal public services department kicked off a major tree-planting push this Tuesday as part of the Mazatlán in Balance reforestation campaign.
Early in the morning, crews from the Parks and Gardens Division set out to the Carretera Internacional median north of the city. There, they planted native species including amapa, fístula, orchid tree, neem and cacalosúchil. This marked the first in a series of plantings designed to reach the campaign’s goal of 5,500 trees in both urban and rural areas by the end of the year.
Mazatlán in Balance reforestation campaign roots itself in community
President Palacios Domínguez launched the initiative on July 23 along Avenida Carlos Canseco, calling for a greener, more sustainable municipality. The project sits at the heart of the “Modern and Sustainable Mazatlán” strategic pillar within the 2024–2027 Municipal Development Plan.
“Mazatlán in Balance reforestation campaign aims not only to beautify our streets but to restore our rural landscape,” said Karla Angélica Camacho Guzmán, Director of Public Services. By mobilizing municipal teams beyond the city center, the campaign underlines the administration’s commitment to environmental stewardship citywide.
Community volunteers have also joined these weekly plantings. Local schools, neighborhood associations and businesses are scheduled to assist in upcoming events, helping to anchor the campaign in local ownership. Each participant receives guidance on tree care to ensure saplings thrive during the region’s dry season.
Strategic impact and long-term vision
Beyond aesthetics, officials stress the ecological benefits. Trees will help shade public spaces, improve air quality and reduce the urban heat island effect. In rural stretches, reforestation will aid soil conservation and boost biodiversity.
“Our goal extends beyond planting trees,” Camacho Guzmán added. “We want to foster a culture of care for our natural surroundings.” The administration plans to monitor survival rates and provide maintenance for the next two years to ensure the campaign’s long-term success.
Next steps and community invitations
The municipal services department has scheduled the next planting for August 12 in the rural outskirts of El Quelite. All residents are invited to take part in the effort to transform Mazatlán into a greener city. Interested volunteers can register through the public services office or the city’s official website.
As the Mazatlán in Balance reforestation campaign gains traction, city leaders hope it will inspire similar green initiatives across Sinaloa. With strategic planning and broad community engagement, Mazatlán is planting the seeds of a more sustainable future—one native tree at a time.
