For visitors, especially those traveling from Spain or other international locations, Cornejo recommends a stay of at least one week.

“This allows time to explore not only our beaches but also our cultural and natural connections with surrounding areas, like Guadalajara, which is just 300 kilometers away and easily accessible,” she explains.

A Hub for Global Events

Puerto Vallarta has evolved beyond its traditional image as a beach destination, emerging as a center for international events and sports tourism. One notable highlight is the UTMB Puerto Vallarta, a premier trail running competition that attracts athletes from across the globe.

“This competition, which winds through the Sierra Madre Occidental, is one of the most important in the Ultra-Trail du Mont-Blanc circuit,” Cornejo explains. “It showcases the diversity of Puerto Vallarta as a destination for both sports and nature tourism.”

Adding to the city’s appeal is the 2026 FIFA World Cup, with Mexico serving as a host country and nearby Guadalajara designated as one of the venues.

“This is an exceptional opportunity to attract international tourists. Many visitors traveling to Guadalajara for matches can extend their trip with a few days in Puerto Vallarta, enjoying our beaches, gastronomy, and cultural offerings,” Cornejo notes.

Overcoming Challenges in Connectivity

While Puerto Vallarta’s geographic location—nestled between mountains and the sea—is part of its allure, it also presents logistical challenges. Road access from Guadalajara, the nearest major city, has historically been difficult. However, efforts are underway to address these issues.

“We are working with state and federal governments to improve road infrastructure,” Cornejo says. “The goal is to facilitate land access for tourists and ensure the efficient transport of goods and services essential for our development.”

In terms of air travel, Puerto Vallarta maintains robust connectivity with direct flights from Mexico City, Guadalajara, and numerous international destinations.

Cornejo emphasizes the importance of ensuring that Puerto Vallarta’s growth benefits its residents. The city’s economy relies heavily on tourism, with much of the local workforce employed in hotels, restaurants, and transportation services.

“Tourism is the backbone of our economy,” she says. “But we also recognize the importance of diversification to provide young people with opportunities beyond the tourism sector.”

Local universities play a crucial role in this effort, offering programs in tourism, business administration, and other fields.

“It is essential that our youth have access to quality education that prepares them to contribute to the development of our region,” Cornejo explains.

The city also addresses social challenges, particularly those faced by its youth in nightlife areas. Initiatives with local institutions aim to create safer environments and provide alternative opportunities for personal and professional growth.
