Puerto Vallarta – During a recent visit to Santa Barbara, California, Puerto Vallarta Mayor Luis Ernesto Munguía González took a firsthand look at a seawater desalination system that may offer his city a much-needed new water source. The trip underscores the increasing importance of bolstering the municipal water supply to meet growing demand in the popular coastal destination.
Santa Barbara, which is twinned with Puerto Vallarta, utilizes a desalination plant that converts seawater into potable water. Mayor Munguía González noted that witnessing the facility’s operation was both enlightening and inspiring.
“We visited the desalination plant and met with the team in charge, including the manager,” Munguía González said. “They explained the process in detail—how many millions of liters of seawater they produce and the procedures they follow to ensure a new source of supply.”
The mayor emphasized the importance of exploring similar methods in Puerto Vallarta to alleviate pressure on existing water resources. As the city continues to grow, it faces the challenge of limited supply and ever-increasing demand for potable water.
Carlos Ruiz, director of Seapal Vallarta—the local water and sewer authority—recently acknowledged that production currently hovers around 1,200 liters of water per second, an amount that is consumed almost immediately. Ruiz described the situation as “stressful” due to a lack of new water supply sources to cover usage peaks and future needs.
Mayor Munguía González believes that introducing desalination to Puerto Vallarta could be a critical step in safeguarding the city’s long-term water security. Moving forward, the local government is expected to evaluate the technical and economic feasibility of adapting Santa Barbara’s desalination model, with hopes of increasing the water supply for residents and businesses alike.
For now, these initial discussions and observations mark the first step in what could become a vital solution to one of Puerto Vallarta’s most pressing challenges: ensuring a reliable source of clean water for the city’s current population and future generations.
