Puerto Vallarta, Mexico – The long-delayed remodeling of Puerto Vallarta’s iconic boardwalk (Malecón) will resume as part of a comprehensive rescue plan for the Historic Center, city manager Juan Pablo Martínez Torres announced. The project, which was left unfinished by the previous administration, will focus initially on improving lighting and repairing damaged slabs along the popular tourist promenade.
Following a meeting with the Advisory Council, chaired by Jorge Villanueva Hernández, Martínez Torres detailed the efforts to revive the project. He noted that the previous administration had failed to meet contractual obligations with the company originally tasked with the work. Now, the city is committed to seeing the renovation through to completion.
New Lighting and Repairs Before Easter
As part of the first phase, 34 new lights will be installed along the stretch from the lighthouse to 31 de Octubre Street. Additionally, damaged slabs will be replaced to ensure a safer and more visually appealing promenade. The entire pier remodeling project is scheduled for completion before the Easter holiday period, a peak tourist season for Puerto Vallarta.
Enhancing Security and Aesthetic Appeal
Martínez Torres also announced a campaign to begin next week aimed at renovating and cleaning building facades in central streets. Enhanced lighting will be a key component of this effort, aimed at improving the perception of security for residents and visitors alike.
A Comprehensive Historic Center Strategy
During the meeting, city officials outlined a broader strategy for conserving and promoting the Historic Center. Key elements include updating the Management Plan for the district and reactivating the Citizen Council of the Historic Center. The plan also involves implementing an urban monitoring system to evaluate impacts and identify areas requiring intervention.
Martínez Torres emphasized that while the challenges facing the Historic Center are well-documented, actionable steps will now be taken to address them systematically.
Collaboration with Business Leaders and Advisory Council
The Advisory Council meeting brought together key stakeholders, including businessmen Ramiro Sierra, Guadalupe Bayardi González, Evangelina Sánchez Dueñas, and María Elena Avelar Mondragón. Councilor Arnulfo Ortega Contreras was also in attendance.
Earlier, Ángel Marcial Carrillo, manager of Smart Government, presented a comprehensive work plan to the council, outlining the city’s strategic approach to urban management.
The revitalization of the boardwalk and Historic Center is expected to bolster Puerto Vallarta’s reputation as a top tourist destination while preserving its cultural and historical identity.
