Puerto Vallarta, Jalisco – The Civil Protection and Fire Department of Puerto Vallarta has issued a warning that the entire Federal Highway 200 South is at significant risk of landslides and mudslides during the rainy season. This assessment is based on the city’s Risk Atlas, which identifies the highway as a high-risk zone due to its geological and topographical characteristics.
First Commander César Zamora, head of operations for the municipal department, elaborated on the situation: “The entire Federal Highway 200 South is considered a risk zone for landslides. That is, due to its characteristics, it is considered to be at risk throughout.”
In contrast, Zamora noted that State Highway 544, which also crosses the municipality, is not deemed to be a high-risk road. “There are some slopes that could wash away a little, but they would not pose a potential risk like 200 Sur,” he added.
In response to the identified risks, the municipal department has implemented preventive and reactive mechanisms to mitigate potential dangers. This includes conducting constant patrols along both State Highway 544 and Federal Highway 200 to monitor conditions and identify possible hazards.
“Our staff is on the lookout to identify possible risks and, in the event of landslides, the Municipal Civil Protection Coordination is activated. This involves dispatching Public Works and Traffic machinery to the site to remove stones or earth. For smaller landslides, our own staff, equipped with hand tools, can clear the road,” Zamora explained.
The department is urging motorists to exercise extreme caution when driving on these highways during the rainy season. “We call on you to drive with due caution, respecting the speed limits and being aware of the road and its sides, because sometimes we have landslides that are generated and people try to outpace you, which can result in serious accidents,” Zamora emphasized.
He also advised drivers to take specific precautions if they encounter a landslide or rockfall while on the road. “If you identify a landslide or rockfall, do not try to drive over it. Instead, wait for the corresponding authorities to remove the debris so you can proceed with the proper precautions,” he added.
The warning comes as Puerto Vallarta enters its rainy season, a period known for increased risks of natural hazards such as landslides, particularly in areas with steep terrain and unstable soils. The Civil Protection and Fire Department’s proactive measures aim to enhance public safety and minimize disruptions caused by these natural events.
Motorists are encouraged to stay informed about weather conditions and road safety advisories issued by local authorities. The cooperation of the public is crucial in ensuring that these safety measures are effective and that the risks associated with landslides during the rainy season are mitigated.
