Puerto Vallarta, Mexico — The Mexican Association of Tourism Developers (Amdetur) has projected a 5 to 6 percent growth in the country’s timeshare sector by 2025, reaffirming Puerto Vallarta’s pivotal role as a prime destination for international vacationers.
The anticipated growth is attributed to Mexico’s stable economic conditions and favorable exchange rates, making the country an attractive option for foreign tourists, particularly from the United States. According to Daniel Linares, Amdetur’s general director, sales for timeshare stays across Mexico are expected to reach $6.7 billion, marking an increase of $350 million compared to the previous year.
This positive trend presents considerable opportunities for tourism developments in Puerto Vallarta, which continues to stand out due to its well-developed infrastructure, vibrant services sector, and strategic geographic location. The city remains a top choice for American travelers, who account for 70 percent of the timeshare market in Mexico. Factors contributing to Puerto Vallarta’s appeal include competitive pricing, ease of access, and diverse vacation offerings.
While U.S. visitors dominate the market, interest from other regions is steadily increasing. Linares noted growing engagement from tourists in Canada, South America, and Brazil, further diversifying the international customer base.
Expansion of Resorts
To meet the rising demand, Amdetur aims to inaugurate between 15 and 20 new resorts nationwide this year, bringing the total number of timeshare properties to 785. The expansion underscores the sector’s resilience despite recent economic challenges, including a temporary slowdown last year.
Executives at Amdetur remain optimistic about a strong rebound in timeshare activity, crediting political and economic stabilization following elections as key factors supporting growth.
The Need for Effective Tourism Promotion
However, the absence of a dedicated government agency for tourism promotion has been identified as a critical challenge. The lack of official marketing efforts has impacted Mexico’s visibility on the global tourism stage. To counter this, private sector initiatives and collaborative efforts are seen as essential to maintaining and enhancing Mexico’s position as a premier destination.
Linares emphasized the importance of strategic promotion for destinations like Puerto Vallarta to capitalize on the current growth opportunities. “Puerto Vallarta’s appeal is undeniable, but continuous efforts are necessary to keep it on the radar of international travelers,” he stated.
