At the end of last year, the percentage of the adult population that considered it unsafe to live in their locality registered an increase in 38 of the 90 cities, including Puerto Vallarta, according to the most recent survey by the National Institute of Statistics and Geography (Inegi).
Of the 38 localities, eight registered the most significant increase compared to December 2021. Campeche’s rate of perception of insecurity went from 39.5% to 66.0%; 26.5 percentage points in one year. The highest increase in the perception of insecurity in the country.
It is followed by Santa Catarina, in Nuevo León, which went from 33.5% to 57.7%, an increase of 24.2 percentage points; Querétaro, with an increase of 16 points to also reach 55.7%; Milpa Alta, in Mexico City, which increased 15.1 units, to settle at 68.9%; Escobedo, who added 11.5 points to finish at 55.5%.
The other cities with significant increases were Colima, with 9.1 units; Puerto Vallarta, 8 points higher and León, Guanajuato, with 7.2.
The cities with the highest percentage of adults who considered living in their cities unsafe were: Fresnillo (97.7%), Zacatecas (93.35%), Irapuato (92.6%), Naucalpan (89.7%), Ecatepec, (89.6%) and Ciudad Obregón (89.2%).
In contrast, the cities where the perception of insecurity is lower are: San Pedro Garza García (8.1%), Los Mochis (15%), Benito Juárez neighborhood in Mexico City (19.4%), Los Cabos (20.9%), Tampico (22.1%) and Cuajimalpa (22.3).
In the second semester of 2022, it is estimated that 26.3% of households in urban areas had a member who was the victim of at least one crime of vehicle theft, home robbery, on the street or public transport, or extortion.
This represents a significant change in relation to the percentage registered in the first half of 2022, which was 27.4%.
In 10.7% of the homes, at least one member was a victim of extortion; in 9.2%, there was at least one victim of robbery or assault on the street or public transport, and in 8.6%, of vehicle theft.
From July to December last year, 15.3% of adults in urban areas were victims of at least one type of sexual harassment and/or violence in public places; a significant change from the first half of 2022 percentage when it was 16.9%.
It is estimated that 10.6% of people were victims of verbal sexual harassment, or they were bothered or offended in public places.
From July to December 2022, 13.4% of those surveyed had contact with a public security authority; 44.6% declared having suffered at least one act of corruption by the authority they came in contact with.
At the end of last year, the percentages of the population aged 18 and over who identified the various public security authorities and who perceived their performance as very or somewhat effective in their work to prevent and combat crime were: Navy (84.6% ), Army (82.3%), National Guard (71.6%), State Police (52%) and Municipal Preventive Police (44.6%).
