Puerto Vallarta, Mexico – In the wake of Hurricane “Otis,” which wreaked havoc in Acapulco, leading to the cancellation of several cruise itineraries, Puerto Vallarta’s tourism sector is poised for a significant uptick. The director of municipal Tourism, Christian Preciad Cazares, confirmed that the city is expecting the arrival of three additional international cruises, rerouted due to the damages in Acapulco.
The city has already welcomed one such cruise, and two more are anticipated. “They even increased one more cruise due to the Acapulco issue, which suffered some damage,” Cazares stated, highlighting the unexpected boost to local tourism.
Looking ahead to the final two months of 2023, projections for the cruise segment in Puerto Vallarta are optimistic. Cazares indicated that the number of cruise passengers visiting the destination is expected to surpass half a million, a significant increase compared to previous years.
Moreover, Acapulco’s loss seems to be Puerto Vallarta’s gain in terms of holiday tourism. Many travelers who had initially planned to use Acapulco’s port for their end-of-year vacations are now being rerouted to Puerto Vallarta, further bolstering the city’s tourist numbers.
In addition to the surge in cruise tourism, air travel to Puerto Vallarta is also on an upward trajectory. Cazares noted a positive outlook for arrivals via the city’s airport, with over 7 million tourists expected to arrive by air. This figure represents a substantial increase from the 6.2 million air tourists recorded last year.
This influx of tourists, both by sea and air, is a boon for Puerto Vallarta’s economy, particularly in the wake of global challenges faced by the tourism industry in recent years. Local businesses, from hotels to restaurants and tour operators, are gearing up to accommodate the increased number of visitors, ensuring their stay in this coastal paradise is memorable and enjoyable.
As Puerto Vallarta prepares to welcome these additional visitors, efforts are also underway to ensure the safety and well-being of both tourists and residents alike, with enhanced health and security measures in place across the city.
This unexpected twist in tourism dynamics, brought about by the aftermath of Hurricane “Otis,” demonstrates the resilience and adaptability of Puerto Vallarta’s tourism sector, ready to turn challenges into opportunities for growth and prosperity.
