Hurricane Hilary Weakens but Still Poses Threat to Baja California and Surrounding Areas

PUERTO VALLARTA (PVDN) – Hilary, the category 3 hurricane, weakened on Saturday, yet still poses a significant threat of causing intense punctual rains in Baja California, Baja California Sur, Sonora (coast), and Sinaloa (north coast), warned the National Weather Service (SMN).

The hurricane is expected to make landfall in Baja California Sur during the early hours of Sunday morning and then continue northward, impacting Baja California by the morning of August 20th, according to the SMN’s forecast.

Various state Civil Protection agencies have undertaken preventive measures in anticipation of Hilary’s arrival.

Baja California Sur Prepares for Hilary’s Arrival In Baja California Sur, elements of the Armed Forces are already on-site to support the population during the passage of Hurricane Hilary, as informed by Governor Víctor Castro. Governor Castro urged residents in risk areas to evacuate their homes. Information on the location of shelters is available on the provided website.

As of Saturday afternoon, the Manuel Márquez de León International Airport in La Paz was still operating normally, though ports have closed to shipping in anticipation of the storm.

The general recommendations for residents in Baja California Sur include:

  • Securing antennas, water tank covers, and infrastructures such as roofs.
  • Protecting doors and windows to prevent damage and injury.
  • If living in a risk area, locating and moving to the nearest shelter.
  • Purchasing non-perishable food and drinking water, sufficient for at least three days.

Baja California Faces Rain from Hurricane Hilary Hurricane Hilary has already caused light to moderate rain in Villa de Jesús María and Punta Prieta, towns in the municipality of San Quintín, as reported by the state Civil Protection office on Saturday.

Authorities have advised residents to maintain total shelter and to contact the emergency number 911 if they require transfer to temporary shelters.

Civil Protection of Baja California has also instructed residents on how to protect their houses from the hurricane, recommending that they cover windows with wood or cross-shaped tape, secure tin roofs, and trim tree limbs that may fall due to wind gusts.

Sonora Braces for Hurricane Hilary The coastal municipalities in the northwest, west, and south of Sonora have transitioned from green to yellow alert on August 19, indicating moderate danger for the population. Residents are urged to identify their nearest temporary shelter and protect important documents.

In addition to occasional heavy rains, Hurricane Hilary is expected to cause waves on the Sonoran coast of five to seven meters in height.

Authorities across the affected states continue to monitor the situation and are urging residents to heed warnings and take the necessary precautions to ensure their safety as Hurricane Hilary approaches.
