In an official statement delivered via social media, the airline VivaAerobus, utilizing its Twitter account, apprised travelers of the disruption. They cited the presence of volcanic ash over the airport area as the primary reason for the temporary suspension of their operations to and from this destination.
"Due to the presence of volcanic ash over the airport area, our operations at this destination are temporarily suspended," the airline announced on its social media platforms.
In light of this situation, the airline urged passengers to exercise utmost caution and vigilance. Additionally, they recommended staying abreast of instructions issued by state authorities and regularly checking the real-time status of flights through the respective airline's websites.
Over the past 24 hours, the Popocatépetl volcano has unleashed ashfall, affecting not only the airport but also areas in the center of Puebla, Huejotzingo, and Calpan. The volcano's activity has been marked by 64 exhalations and 1,158 minutes of tremors. Nevertheless, the volcanic alert currently remains at Yellow Phase 2.
According to the National Coordination of Civil Protection, volcanic ash comprises tiny particles formed during volcanic eruptions, measuring less than 2 mm in size. These particles can have far-reaching and lasting effects, even after the eruption ceases.
