As reported by the Jalisco Government, the tragic event unfolded after the collective Mothers Searchers of Jalisco received an anonymous call directing them to an alleged clandestine grave near Tlajomulco's center. In response, members of the Jalisco Prosecutor's Office, municipal police, and civilians, including minors, headed to the site. Authorities have labeled this event an ambush, with land mines laid on the dirt road detonating as the convoy approached, resulting in a high casualty count.
In the aftermath, Jalisco's governor announced the suspension of all missing person searches until further notice. This decision faced harsh criticism from the UN and local groups. In a statement issued on July 13, the UN condemned the Tlajomulco tragedy and urged the state not to abandon the search for missing persons.
The UN's statement emphasized that a prompt and effective investigation into the attack is crucial, and all efforts should be made to identify and punish the responsible parties. It also called for support to be provided to the affected families and survivors. The UN Committee against Enforced Disappearance stressed that the search for missing persons is a continuous obligation that must not be suspended.

The Mothers Searchers of Jalisco denied any connection with the tragic event, stating that they did not receive the alleged call that led to the incident and they never conduct field searches at night.
In a statement on their social media, they said, "We categorically deny that it has anything to do with us, we deny that the people involved are part of our group…we never received that call and we never went out to the field at night, it is illogical." The collective also asserted that they would continue their searches, criticizing the governor's ban as a violation of the rights of the disappeared and their families.
