Puerto Vallarta, Jalisco – As part of an ongoing effort to increase public safety, the Puerto Vallarta government has installed over 120 alert and video surveillance totems at strategic locations across the city. The new surveillance network, designed to bolster security and enable rapid response to emergencies, primarily targets areas with higher-than-average crime rates, or “red zones.”
This initiative, funded by resources from the municipal trust fund FORTAMUN, is expected to reduce crime through vigilant monitoring and more responsive emergency services. The totems, equipped with advanced audio and video technology, were initially approved by the previous municipal administration and have since been distributed across various high-risk neighborhoods. Of the total units installed, 100 feature fixed cameras, while the remaining 20 are fitted with rotating cameras, allowing for broader visual coverage. All devices are connected to the city’s Command and Control Center (C2), a centralized hub located in the Security Police Station, where law enforcement officers monitor and coordinate real-time responses.
According to local authorities, the totems’ installation was initially slated for completion before the current administration assumed office. However, logistical challenges have delayed the project’s final stages, with full operational status expected to be achieved within the coming days.
These new surveillance posts not only serve to capture real-time footage but also provide citizens with a direct line to law enforcement. Residents can press an emergency button on the totems to connect immediately with C2 operators, streamlining police response to incidents as they arise. This functionality is particularly emphasized in areas such as the Linear Park and various main avenues, which have seen higher incidences of violence, including cases of gender-based violence.
Local government representatives have expressed confidence that the new surveillance system will serve as both a deterrent to crime and a tool for faster intervention in emergencies. By implementing this project, Puerto Vallarta joins a growing list of Mexican cities investing in technology-driven security measures to counter rising urban crime.
