Puerto Vallarta Strives for Blue Flag Recertification of Playa de Oro

Puerto Vallarta, Mexico—The local community and hoteliers have strongly reaffirmed their commitment to recertifying Playa de Oro under the ‘Blue Flag’ program. This initiative underscores the area’s ongoing dedication to maintaining high environmental standards and promoting sustainable tourism practices.

During a crucial meeting between local authorities and representatives from the private sector, a consensus was reached to streamline the necessary administrative processes, including requirements and payments, to ensure the timely acquisition of the prestigious ‘Blue Flag’ certification, anticipated to be awarded in June of this year.

Maritza Arely Flores Sevilla, Deputy Director of the municipal Environment, highlighted the collective enthusiasm from both the municipal government and the hotel industry to secure the ‘Blue Flag’ recertification for Playa de Oro. This effort reflects a longstanding commitment to environmental stewardship and the enhancement of tourist experiences in the region.

The meeting also served as a platform to address various concerns raised by hoteliers, including issues related to security, street commerce, homelessness, and the efficacy of cleaning and garbage collection services. Furthermore, participants discussed proposals to improve the aesthetic and accessibility of Playa de Oro, which remains one of the most popular destinations for both tourists and local residents.

The ‘Blue Flag’ program, recognized internationally, sets stringent criteria relating to water quality, environmental management, safety, and services. The recertification of Playa de Oro under this program would not only reaffirm Puerto Vallarta’s commitment to environmental excellence but also significantly enhance its appeal as a premier tourist destination.

The collaborative efforts between government bodies and the private sector illustrate a unified approach to fostering a sustainable and welcoming environment for all visitors to Playa de Oro. The anticipated recertification in June will mark a significant milestone in Puerto Vallarta’s ongoing journey towards sustainable development and ecological responsibility.
