There will be no bus service in downtown Puerto Vallarta during Holy Days

Puerto Vallarta, Mexico – Beginning at 12:00 p.m. today and lasting through the end of Sunday, public‑transport routes that normally enter Puerto Vallarta’s downtown core will be suspended as holiday traffic surges, transit operator Unibus PV announced on its official social‑media channels early Thursday.

The temporary measure, coordinated with both state and municipal authorities, is designed to ease congestion during the extended Holy Days vacation period, when the city’s vehicle fleet is expected to swell. “Our number‑one priority is maintaining fluid mobility for residents and visitors alike,” the company said in its statement.

How routes will change

  • No buses inside Centro: All units that usually terminate in the Centro Histórico will instead be diverted at Parque Hidalgo. Passengers heading for the Malecón, the cathedral, or adjoining neighborhoods will need to disembark there or seek alternate transportation.
  • Tunnel route unaffected: The popular line that traverses the Libramiento tunnel will run its full length without modification, offering a continuous north‑south option that bypasses the downtown bottleneck.

City officials urge commuters to plan transfers in advance, accounting for extra walking time from Parque Hidalgo or for possible delays on connecting services. Additional traffic police will be stationed at key intersections to direct the influx of private vehicles and tour buses expected over the holiday weekend.

Service resumes Monday

Unibus PV confirmed that normal downtown service is slated to resume at the first scheduled departure on Monday, April 21. Riders can monitor real‑time updates via the company’s X (formerly Twitter) feed and its official mobile app.

The suspension is the latest in a series of crowd‑control measures adopted by Puerto Vallarta during peak tourism periods. Last year, authorities closed several downtown streets to private cars during Semana Santa, a move city hall later credited with reducing travel times along the coastal corridor by nearly 20 percent.
