American Airlines Doubles Down on Chicago–Puerto Vallarta Service This Winter

Puerto Vallarta, Mexico – American Airlines, a longstanding carrier between Chicago and Puerto Vallarta, today announced a major winter schedule expansion at its Midwest hub, Chicago O’Hare International Airport (ORD). Starting this coming winter season, the airline will introduce seven new routes from ORD—including five entirely new international services—and boost frequencies on existing warm-weather flights, solidifying its position as the leading carrier from Chicago to Mexico, the Caribbean, and Central America.

U.S.–Latin America Growth
In a company statement, American Airlines revealed plans to more than double its regional network from ORD, adding nonstop service to Curaçao (CUR), St. Croix (STX), St. Maarten (SXM), Guatemala City (GUA), and San José, Costa Rica (SJO). These will join the 11 current destinations served out of Chicago, offering travelers an unprecedented range of tropical and cultural getaways during the winter months.

With spring arriving in Chicago, we’re already looking forward to providing our customers a respite from the harsh Midwest winter,” said Ben Humphrey, American’s vice president of Chicago operations. “Our expansion means more options and greater flexibility for travelers seeking sun, sand, and culture.

Bolstering Mexican Resort Service
Building on its status as the largest foreign airline in Mexico—with service to 30 destinations nationwide—American Airlines will also raise flight frequencies on its three key Mexican resort routes:

  • Puerto Vallarta (PVR): Service increases to two daily round-trips from December 18, 2025, through January 6, 2026, catering to both holiday travelers and winter sun seekers heading to the Riviera Nayarit coast.
  • Cancún (CUN): Beginning November 2, 2025, Chicagoans will enjoy three daily nonstop flights.
  • Los Cabos (SJD): Also as of November 2, the route will grow to two daily flights, connecting ORD with the beaches and golf courses of Baja California Sur.

These enhancements will position American Airlines as the carrier offering the most flights from Chicago to Mexico this winter, outpacing all competitors in frequency and route breadth.

By broadening its Midwest gateway offerings, American Airlines expects to accommodate rising demand for winter getaways, ensuring that Chicago’s travelers have the most extensive selection of warm-weather escapes—whether it’s the beaches of Puerto Vallarta, the historic streets of Guatemala City, or the Caribbean islands of Curaçao and St. Maarten.
