Beware of New Scam Targeting Tourists in Puerto Vallarta

Puerto Vallarta, Jalisco – The Jalisco State Civil Protection and Firefighters Unit has issued a public warning after reports surfaced of individuals posing as Civil Protection officials to fraudulently obtain personal information from tourists and residents in Puerto Vallarta. The scam, which began last weekend, involves phone calls to hotels where the perpetrators claim to coordinate package deliveries in exchange for sensitive personal data.

In an official statement, the agency clarified that it does not request personal information or resources from individuals or companies under any circumstances. “It is important to point out that our corporation does NOT request resources or confidential information from companies or individuals under this procedure. We warn that these calls are misleading and have fraudulent intentions,” the statement read.

The fraudulent calls, targeting tourists staying in Puerto Vallarta hotels, have raised concerns about the potential for identity theft and financial fraud. Authorities emphasize that such scams are not only illegal but can also have severe consequences for victims, including financial losses, emotional distress, and a breach of trust.

Fraud is a criminal offense in Mexico, punishable by fines, restitution, and even imprisonment. Victims of fraud are encouraged to report incidents to the appropriate authorities. For consumer-related fraud, individuals can contact the Federal Consumer Protection Agency (PROFECO). Financial fraud can be reported to the National Commission for the Protection and Defense of Users of Financial Services (CONDUSEF), while criminal fraud cases should be directed to the Public Prosecutor’s Office.

The Jalisco Civil Protection Unit urges the public to remain vigilant and avoid sharing personal information over the phone unless the caller’s identity can be verified. “If you receive a suspicious call, hang up immediately and report it to the authorities,” the agency advised.

As Puerto Vallarta continues to be a popular destination for international and domestic tourists, local authorities are working to ensure the safety and security of visitors. Residents and tourists alike are reminded to stay informed and cautious to avoid falling victim to such scams.

For further assistance or to report fraudulent activity, contact:

  • PROFECO: 55-68-87-22 or visit www.profeco.gob.mx
  • CONDUSEF: 55-53-400-999 or visit www.condusef.gob.mx
  • Public Prosecutor’s Office: Visit your local office or call 911 for emergencies.

Stay alert and protect your personal information to avoid becoming a victim of fraud.
