Puerto Vallarta, Mexico – In preparation for the summer vacation period, health authorities in Jalisco have ramped up efforts to combat dengue fever, which has already seen 503 confirmed cases according to the results of epidemiological week number 25.
The Ministry of Tourism has scheduled inspections at hotels in Puerto Vallarta to identify and eliminate mosquito breeding grounds. Additionally, open areas in schools in the Costa region are being inspected to ensure they remain clean and free of junk.
The Second Ordinary Session of the Transectoral Unit for the Prevention and Control of Vector-Borne Diseases of the State of Jalisco was held this morning. Chaired by the Secretary of Health in the entity, Fernando Petersen Aranguren, the session highlighted the collaboration of various government agencies in the fight against dengue. Aranguren expressed gratitude for the strengthened actions, especially during the summer vacation period when an increase in cases is expected.
“Working with municipal presidents is essential. Eliminating junk and everything that has to do with eliminating breeding grounds is the key to not having cases of dengue,” stated Aranguren. He emphasized the importance of collective action in high-impact areas to reduce dengue cases, citing the reduction of cases in Puerto Vallarta as an example of successful intervention.
During the inter-institutional meeting, officials from the Secretariats of Education and Tourism presented reports on their efforts to combat dengue. These efforts include the supervision of hotels and motels in Puerto Vallarta, as well as educational institutions in the coastal region, to identify and eliminate mosquito breeding grounds.
Arturo Dávalos Peña, Director of Beach Tourism, explained that the Ministry of Tourism has been proactive in safeguarding the integrity of visitors to tourist destinations, particularly Puerto Vallarta. “We sent a letter from the Ministry of Tourism to the Association of Hotels and Motels of Puerto Vallarta to schedule inspections within their facilities, focusing on areas like rooftops, near pools, and gardens where water can accumulate and mosquitoes can breed,” said Dávalos Peña.
The tourism official also mentioned that informative talks have been scheduled for hotel and motel staff on preventive measures against vector-borne diseases. Additionally, periodic inspections are conducted on the Puerto Vallarta boardwalk, the City Hall, Hidalgo Park, and public parking lots.
Dávalos Peña highlighted the importance of cross-border cooperation with neighboring regions such as Nayarit and Colima. “We are close to Nayarit, to Bahía de Banderas, where there is a daily flow of thousands of people who travel to work from Bahía to Puerto Vallarta, and on the other side with Colima, there is Cihuatlán and La Huerta, where we have also taken action in these municipalities with the Jurisdiction of Autlán de Navarro,” he explained.
Alfonso Enrique Oliva Mojica, Director of Compensatory and Support Programs of the Ministry of Education, reported that training has been conducted for directors and support staff of primary, secondary, and telesecondary schools in the Western Coast Sierra Region. He stated that various areas of educational establishments have been inspected and cleaned to eliminate mosquito breeding grounds. “We also request that plants be washed with water and maintained periodically to prevent mosquito reproduction,” he added.
Preventive measures and interventions for confirmed cases will continue throughout the holiday period. Secretary of Health Fernando Petersen Aranguren concluded the meeting by urging the public to remain vigilant. “Although this is a complicated period in which dengue cases can skyrocket, it is through the combined efforts of all sectors, government, and society that we can stop the spread of the disease,” he reiterated.
