Category 4 Hurricane Simon: Puerto Vallarta Remains Under Hurricane Warning
Hurricane Simon remains a dangerous Category 4 storm with sustained winds of 150 mph (240 km/h), according to the National Hurricane Center’s Saturday morning advisory.
The storm is approximately 215 miles (345 km) south-southeast of Cabo Corrientes, moving slowly north. It is expected to approach Mexico’s west-central coast late Saturday or early Sunday.
Puerto Vallarta remains under a hurricane warning. Tropical-storm-force winds could begin affecting portions of the warning area this afternoon, with hurricane conditions expected in the southern part of the warning area early Sunday. The reported 150-mph winds are near Simon’s center, not a specific wind forecast for Puerto Vallarta.
Heavy rainfall is a major concern. Parts of Jalisco and neighboring states could receive 10 to 20 inches of rain, with isolated areas seeing up to 30 inches. These are regional forecasts, not rainfall predictions specifically for Puerto Vallarta. Flash flooding, overflowing waterways, landslides and dangerous coastal waves are significant threats.
Residents should complete storm preparations today, avoid beaches and waterways, and follow instructions from local Civil Protection authorities.
