Puerto Vallarta, Mexico – A magnitude 5.8 earthquake was recorded off the coast of Jalisco early today, prompting the evacuation of at least 300 people from the Municipal Administrative Unit (UMA) in Puerto Vallarta. The tremor, which originated 223 kilometers southwest of Cihuatlán, also rattled residents of Puerto Vallarta and Cabo Corrientes, according to the state Civil Protection agency.
Although the seismic event was significant in strength, the Tsunami Warning Center confirmed that its characteristics and offshore location posed no tsunami threat to Mexico’s coastlines, and no further bulletins were issued. In Puerto Vallarta, Municipal Civil Protection and Fire Department personnel ordered a full evacuation of the UMA building as a preventive measure.
“After an inspection of the structural integrity, no injuries were reported, and all personnel were able to return to work safely,” the department stated. Once the all-clear was given, employees reentered the building under routine safety protocols.
Officials emphasized that no hotels or other structures in the port area reported evacuations or damage. Authorities continue to monitor aftershocks and have urged residents to remain vigilant but calm.
