Puerto Vallarta is gearing up for an intense winter season as it expects a significant influx of Canadian tourists, solidifying its position as the second most important international market for this renowned beach destination. The reactivation of flights from major Canadian cities—Calgary, Montreal, Toronto, and Vancouver—has positioned Puerto Vallarta among the top three national destinations attracting tourism from Canada.
For the upcoming season, Canadian airlines Transat, WestJet, Sunwing, and Air Canada are set to increase their number of seats by up to 24 percent. This expansion includes flights from cities such as Toronto, Vancouver, Victoria, and Winnipeg. The increased capacity is anticipated to help Puerto Vallarta achieve at least a 75% average annual occupancy rate.
As of August this year, Puerto Vallarta has welcomed 304,788 Canadian visitors, marking a 2.15 percent increase over the total number of Canadian tourists in 2022, which stood at 298,358. This upward trend signifies a robust recovery and growing confidence in the destination’s appeal.
“The growth of Canadian tourism to Mexico, mainly to Puerto Vallarta, is a reflection of the confidence and recovery that the port projects,” said Luis Villaseñor Nolasco, General Director of the Public Trust for the Promotion and Advertising of Tourism. He added that Puerto Vallarta is not only a benchmark for Canadian tourism but has also recorded the arrival of approximately 2,863,800 international passengers from various markets during the first nine months of 2023.
The anticipated surge in Canadian tourists highlights Puerto Vallarta’s enduring allure and its successful efforts to boost international tourism. With increased flight availability and rising visitor numbers, the destination is poised for a prosperous winter season.
