Puerto Vallarta, Jalisco— In commemoration of International Women’s Day on March 8, iconic landmarks throughout Puerto Vallarta have been lit in vibrant purple, signaling unity and solidarity with women in the local community and across the nation. The director of the Municipal Institute for Women in Puerto Vallarta (IMM PV), Sarahy Hernández, confirmed that several well-known sites—including the Plaza de Armas, the Aquiles Serdán open-air theater, the city entrance signs, and the Muelle de Los Muertos—have been illuminated since March 1, with the support of Mayor Luis Munguía.
In addition to the city’s main tourist and historical spots, Hernández noted that efforts also extended to the Parque de las Mujeres. Over the past couple of weeks, workers have cleaned the park and installed lighting that highlights the purple color across the Angel sculpture and the Memorial of the Victims of Femicide. According to Hernández, these interventions serve to “dignify this space in order to build an environment of social peace,” underscoring the broader aim of remembering women’s struggles and achievements while advocating for safer, more equitable communities.
The Parque de las Mujeres will also be the central gathering point for a march on March 8, during which demonstrators plan to peacefully protest the rise in gender-based violence and femicides throughout the country. Organizers emphasize that the march is an opportunity for women and allies to come together, raise awareness, and demand meaningful actions to address these alarming issues.
As Puerto Vallarta shines purple, residents and visitors alike are encouraged to reflect on the significance of International Women’s Day, stand in solidarity with those advocating for women’s rights, and help foster a future free of violence and discrimination.
