Puerto Vallarta, Mexico — The National Meteorological Service (SMN) has issued a yellow alert for the Colima Volcano, also known as the ‘Volcán de Fuego,’ due to increased volcanic activity. This alert signifies a heightened level of vigilance as the colossus, one of the most active volcanoes in Mexico, exhibits significant geological movements.
The SMN, along with the National Water Commission (Conagua), is maintaining around-the-clock surveillance to monitor any changes in the volcano’s behavior that may pose a risk to the surrounding population. Authorities have strictly prohibited approaching the volcano during this period of elevated activity.
Historically, the Colima Volcano has been a prominent source of volcanic activity over the past 500 years, recording more than 40 significant events, including explosions and lava flows. Notable eruptions have occurred in 1576, 1606, 1690, 1818, 1869, 1903, and 1913. More recent periods of intense activity were observed during the 1960s and 1970s, 1981-1982, 1991, 1998-1999, the early 2000s until 2003, 2004-2005, 2007-2011, and 2013-2017. The last recorded explosion occurred on February 3, 2017.
In the past week alone, the Colima Volcano has experienced 11 earthquakes and an equal number of landslides, prompting the yellow alert. This ongoing activity underscores the importance of the continuous monitoring being conducted by Conagua’s authorities.
The volcanic alert traffic light system, currently set to yellow, indicates potential danger, urging caution and preparedness among the local communities. The SMN’s permanent surveillance aims to provide timely updates on any changes that might necessitate further action or alert levels.
Residents and visitors in the region are advised to stay informed through official channels and adhere to safety recommendations issued by local authorities. The proactive measures taken by the SMN and Conagua are crucial in ensuring public safety and mitigating the risks associated with the Colima Volcano’s persistent activity.
