PUERTO VALLARTA, MEXICO – The bustling Gustavo Díaz Ordaz International Airport in Puerto Vallarta is undergoing a significant transformation with the construction of its new Terminal 2 (T2), a project set to redefine the travel experience in this major tourist destination.
Led by Grupo Aeroportuario del Pacífico (GAP), Terminal 2 will span over 62,000 square meters across four levels—representing a 165% increase over the existing terminal facilities. As of March 2025, airport officials report that construction has surpassed 30% completion.
Timelines and Capacity Increases
Although initial plans aimed for completion by the end of 2024, weather-related factors slowed the construction pace. Nevertheless, the first phase of T2 is projected to be operational in 2025, with the entire project slated for final completion in 2026. Once finished, T2 will feature eight new passenger boarding bridges and an apron expansion of more than 70,000 square meters. These enhancements will boost the airport’s passenger capacity by 73% and its operational space by 51%, ensuring it can serve a greater volume of travelers more efficiently.
Sustainability at Its Core
A standout feature of the new terminal is its ambitious sustainability program. GAP confirms that T2 has been designed to operate under the “Net Zero” standard, meaning it will achieve zero carbon emissions. Plans include the installation of solar panels to provide 100% of the terminal’s energy needs, as well as a rainwater recovery system for use in various airport operations.
Significant Investment and Architectural Vision
Backed by an investment of 7 billion pesos—part of the Puerto Vallarta 2020-2024 Master Development Plan—Terminal 2 represents both an economic and functional milestone for the region. With a design by renowned architect Benjamín Romano, the new terminal will blend modern efficiency with the natural beauty of Puerto Vallarta’s surrounding jungle. The project prioritizes responsible water management, reduced emissions, and minimal environmental impact.
As Puerto Vallarta continues to grow in popularity as a travel destination, the completion of Terminal 2 promises not only to meet increasing passenger demand but also to elevate the overall airport experience with cutting-edge facilities and a strong commitment to sustainability.
