Acapulco has been plagued by violence from organized crime for more than 15 years. Last Sunday, January 8, under a bridge on the Mexico-Acapulco highway, in the town of San Martín “El Jovero”, the police found 5 dismembered and bagged corpses inside a car that had been burned.
In the town of Xaltianguis, north of the port, two other men were murdered, the Prosecutor’s Office reported on Monday. Xaltianguis has been contested by rival gangs, some of which are believed to have ties to drug cartels.
Five days earlier, on Tuesday, January 3, a bag with human remains had been found at the exit to Pie de la Cuesta, and the head of a woman appeared inside a cardboard box in the “La Laja” subdivision.
Last Sunday the 15th, the relatives of Larry “N”, a dismembered man wrapped in sacks whose remains were dumped in the tourist town of San Andrés Playa Encantada, and police were prevented from working the crime scene, and they brought Larry’s pieces in a wheelbarrow.
The following day, this Monday, the body of a man with his throat cut was found in the “La Fábrica” neighborhood, in front of the Central Market of the city. And at the same time, two more corpses appeared on the Diamante Viaduct. The victims were handcuffed and with traces of torture.
In less than two weeks, the drug war in Acapulco has left 35 dead.
On January 11, the operational chief of the Acapulco Auxiliary Police, Samuel Buenfil Espinoza, had left his home and was heading to the facilities of the Ministry of Public Security.
Just a few meters from the door of the building, the two gang members on a motorcycle were waiting for him. It was eleven o’clock in the morning when he was shot and died instantly, his body was left lying on a sidewalk in the port of Guerrero known as “the Pearl of the Pacific.”
After attacking the officer, the assailants fled and have not been identified. The Guerrero State Attorney General’s Office (FGE) collected 15 9 mm caliber shell casings.
Although no arrest has been reported for the execution of Samuel Buenfil, the Acapulco Municipal Government Spokesperson reported in a statement that the motorcycle on which the alleged hitmen fled was found in the La Garita neighborhood, located about 4 kilometers away.
Acapulco with 110.5 homicides per 100,000 inhabitants, is ranked the second most violent city in the world, according to a ranking by the international consulting firm Statista, which evaluates the murder rate in 50 cities of the world. Tijuana, Baja California is considered as the most violent city in the world according to the firm.
Although in the last 10 months, the authorities implemented operations with federal and state forces to monitor the streets, the violence in this port is unstoppable: In the first half of 2022, Acapulco added 213 intentional homicides, according to the Executive Secretariat of the System National Public Security (SESNSP).
