Toronto, Canada – A Delta Air Lines flight carrying 80 passengers and crew crashed while landing at Toronto Pearson International Airport on Monday, February 17. The aircraft, a Bombardier CRJ900 operated by Endeavor Air, had departed from Minneapolis, Minnesota, before flipping over upon impact with the runway. Authorities confirmed that 18 passengers sustained injuries, including one Mexican citizen, with three in critical condition. Fortunately, no fatalities have been reported.
Mexican Consulate Confirms National on Board
Among the passengers was a Mexican citizen, the Consulate General of Mexico in Toronto confirmed. However, the individual was not among those hospitalized following the accident.
“In collaboration with the relevant authorities, we are tracking a compatriot on the crashed flight at @TorontoPearson, who is NOT on the list of people transferred to hospitals,” the consulate posted on its official X account (formerly Twitter). The post also provided an emergency contact line (+1 647-448-1329) for concerned relatives.
Emergency Response and Injuries
Emergency services swiftly responded to the crash site, deploying three helicopters and two intensive care ambulances. Medical teams transported three seriously injured passengers—a child, a man in his 60s, and a woman in her 40s—to local hospitals.
“A child was taken to hospital with serious injuries. A man in his 60s and a woman in her 40s were also seriously injured,” a spokesperson for the medical aid organization Ornge told AFP.
Investigation Underway
The cause of the crash remains unknown, and authorities have urged against speculation until the Transportation Safety Board of Canada (TSB) completes its investigation.
Preliminary reports indicate that the aircraft made contact with the runway before overturning, sustaining visible structural damage, including severed wings. However, weather conditions do not appear to have been a factor.
“It’s too early to tell what happened. What we can say is that the runway was dry and there were no crosswind conditions at the time of landing,” said Todd Aitken, chief of the airport’s fire department, during a press conference.
Ongoing Weather Challenges in Eastern Canada
The accident occurred as eastern Canada continued to recover from a heavy snowstorm on Sunday. While conditions in Toronto had improved on Monday, authorities have not ruled out residual effects from the storm as a potential factor in airport operations.
The TSB has dispatched a team of investigators to the scene, and updates will be provided as more details emerge.
