Puerto Vallarta, Jalisco – After experiencing significant water shortages in 2024, Puerto Vallarta faces the potential for an active fire season in 2025 due to an abundance of dry vegetation. This heightened risk was confirmed by César Zamora Olivera, head of Risk Management at the Puerto Vallarta Civil Protection and Fire Department.
“This year, 2025, the meteorological report indicates water stress during the season,” Zamora Olivera stated. “This suggests that we will likely encounter extensive dry vegetation, necessitating increased vigilance starting in the second half of February.”
To mitigate risks, authorities are urging the public to refrain from forest burning outside regulated periods and avoid lighting bonfires in the municipality’s wild areas.
In 2024, Puerto Vallarta recorded 95 fires between January and May alone. Of these, 16 were forest fires, while 79 occurred in grasslands. These incidents significantly impacted both urban and rural areas.
To combat these challenges, the municipal Civil Protection and Fire Department is equipped with a workforce of 158 personnel operating in three shifts. “Our team has the necessary equipment and machinery to provide immediate attention to fire emergencies,” Zamora Olivera emphasized.
The areas most prone to fires include Ixtapa, El Colorado, Las Palmas, and the southern coastal region bordering Cabo Corrientes. These zones require heightened surveillance during the dry season to prevent and respond to fire outbreaks.
Zamora Olivera stressed the importance of collaboration among municipal agricultural development authorities, ejidos, and state and federal agencies. “This coordination allows us to address needs effectively and establish a forest burning agenda, ensuring prompt attention to fire-related incidents,” he explained.
With the dry season approaching, authorities are urging the population to act responsibly by adhering to regulations and avoiding activities that could inadvertently spark fires. The community’s cooperation is vital to minimizing the risks posed by this challenging season.
