Puerto Vallarta, Mexico — The Malecón of Puerto Vallarta burst into life with joy and color as Mayor Luis Munguía unveiled the “Spiritual Guardian of the Monumental Catrina,” an event that attracted hundreds of residents and their beloved pets.
The centerpiece of the celebration is a colossal figure of a Xoloitzcuintle dog, measuring 8 meters in length and 7 meters in height. Crafted from fiberglass and ironwork, the sculpture is adorned with motifs that pay homage to the rich traditions of the Day of the Dead. This artistic masterpiece was created by Costumbres y Tradiciones Vivas, in collaboration with the city council.
Before the grand unveiling, Mayor Munguía, accompanied by his dog Shila, led a festive dog walk along the boardwalk. The procession transformed into a vibrant celebration of culture and tradition, embodying the spirit of the Day of the Dead as part of the “Remember Me Festival.”
“The Spiritual Guardian of the Monumental Catrina is not just a symbol; it’s a tribute to our heritage and a celebration of the bonds we share with our pets,” said Mayor Munguía during the ceremony.
The monumental Catrina and her spiritual guide will grace the Malecón until November 17, offering both locals and visitors the opportunity to admire these stunning installations. The display aims to immerse spectators in the cultural significance of the Day of the Dead, a time when families honor their ancestors through vibrant festivities.
The inclusion of the Xoloitzcuintle, a breed revered in ancient Aztec culture as a guide for souls in the afterlife, adds profound meaning to the sculpture. It serves as a reminder of the deep-rooted traditions that continue to shape the cultural landscape of Puerto Vallarta.
Residents and tourists alike are encouraged to visit the Malecón to experience firsthand the fusion of art, culture, and tradition that this year’s Day of the Dead festivities have to offer.
